Letter #: 383264
Category: Career

Original Letter

Hi, my name is samantha im 23 years old and i have a beautiful 1yo daughter. I never graduated high school nor did i get my GED yet so right now im working as an receptionist. I dont make much money and i have a home to support and i know i have to work on getting my GED before i can start a career move. Heres the problem, i dont know what to do with my life! Ive never really focused much in school i do feel like i have a learning disability so its hard for me to focus. I love to work though i just dont know where i see myself 5 years from now and its scary because i have a family to take care of. I dont have any hobbys and im not talented in anything i sometimes feel like another statistic doing absolutely nothing with my life. I just dont know where to start and i wish i can talk to someone whos been in my shoes before to understand me and where im coming from. I hope a quarter of my story makes sense and you can help me out. Thank you kindly. Sam

Elder Response

Thanks for writing. I don't know about you, but I can get overwhelmed with the woulda, coulda, shoulda's in life. If only I was smarter, more confident, better looking, had better self-worth, etc. It can be so easy to fall into this downward spiral and feel like life is out of control. Does that make sense? I hope to interrupt your current thinking and get you to try something different. I hope you are willing.

There is a great little video on YouTube called Ten Tips for Improving Self-Esteem. It is less than ten minutes long and it is something that I turn to on a somewhat regular basis to help me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc-B536E6MY and also sending you the message itself. Please read and if you can go and view it. Here are the tips:

  1. Stop comparing yourself to others.
  2. Keep your thoughts positive.
  3. Accept all compliments with thank you.
  4. Feed yourself with positivity.
  5. Associate with supportive people.
  6. List your past successes.
  7. Celebrate your qualities.
  8. Do good for others.
  9. Find your passion.
  10. Be you and don't apologize.

Don't be too hard on yourself Sam, you have your health and you are raising a beautiful baby girl. I think the answers you are looking for are coming your way. Be patient. Sometimes I like to just sit quietly and listen to my inner voice. I ask, what do I love to do? What would really get me excited to do? Don't censor the question, just ask and listen. For me, I love to help people and so I became a personal life coach and started writing advice letters with Elder Wisdom. I feel confident that you will find your way too.

I hope I have been able to be at least a quarter helpful to you Sam. Thank you for writing. It shows that you care. We are always here and welcome you to write us back anytime. Take care.

Best Regards,

Elias
