She’s torn between more work or more education.
Yes, times may be tough now, says our elder, but an investment in yourself will always pay off.
Dear EWC:
I’m currently under a bit of a personal ordeal. I had to quit going to school to start working in order to pay for things in the house and such. I have an opportunity to go back and get a diploma, with little to no cost to me, as there is financial aid and my mom is willing to help me.
I’m just debating on whether or not to pursue it—or not try and seek out another job. That way, I could go back to working more, since COVID has put a strain on the hours available at my current workplace.
My boyfriend currently lives with me, and he has no job so I am struggling to support us both which is another big reason why I can’t decide on going back to school, or trying to get more hours in at work. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Hedwig replies:
There is now, and there is the future. You know where you are now. Where do you want to be five years from now? Where do you want to be 10 years ahead? That is what you should think about.
Education is a key, opening doors that would otherwise always be locked, shutting you out. I also believe that you have the choice of struggling now or struggling in the future. It is better to struggle now so that you can have an easier, more rewarding, happier future. So, you can see where I am heading.
Go back to school. Make the best of yourself that you can. You may or may not end up with this jobless boyfriend, so strike out to make your own career. Whether or not you end up supporting him, you will always have to take care of yourself. Give yourself the most opportunities possible. You are so fortunate your mom can and will help you. She also sees the possibilities of a better future ahead. Go for it. Education is never wasted!
