I flirted with a guy and then found out he has a girlfriend. Now I’m too embarrassed to go to college.
Don’t overthink it, says our elder. It was an honest mistake.
Dear EWC
I feel so bad. I flirted with a guy who has a girlfriend. I did it at a college society and I was wondering why I didn’t see him at any other events because I stupidly assumed he was single. So then to make matters worse I reached out to him on social media and asked him if he had done the work for the chem lab (knowing fully well that that’s not his discipline) and then just after I realized he has a girlfriend and I feel soooo terrible I’m not the type of person to do that normally you know? So should I feign ignorance if he replies and be like sorry wrong number or just never go to college again ever. I just can’t stand that I did something so bad. I’m so embarrassed and guilty, I’ve never been in a proper relationship but I can only imagine how I’d feel if I was her with some crazy girl talking to her boyfriend. Please help me I feel so foolish and I want to set the record straight somehow without sacrificing the friends I know in the club who have known him longer

We are a group of seniors living in a retirement community, and we are glad you wrote to Elder Wisdom Circle.
In reading through your letter, the first thing we would like to say is: take a deep breath. What we would recommend is that you let the whole situation go. You have no reason to apologize! From what you have described, it sounds like you made an honest mistake. It happens, so don’t overthink the situation. Where it would become a problem is if you were to pursue him now, knowing that he is in a relationship. But since it doesn’t sound like you have any intention of doing that, you have no reason to feel guilty.
Even when you’re in a relationship, you are allowed to have friends, and you are allowed to talk to people. If this guy was simply being friendly with you, there is nothing wrong with that. Now that you know he’s in a relationship, you know not to push. So, again, just take a step back, and breathe. You’re going to be fine.
We wish you the best of luck, now and always.
